JOHN ROBERT "JACK" COMPTON ~ Class of 1972

John Robert "Jack" Compton died in Redmond, OR on November 14, 2016. Jack was born in Richland on August 13, 1953, and was educated in the Richland public schools.

He was the second son of Bill and Betty Compton, early Hanford immigrants. Jack worked in construction as a framer all of his adult life. He was a hard worker, and an able one. His work took him to most of the states of the inter-mountain West, with his construction partner, Don Biddle ('75).

In his thirties, he was bitten by the "gold bug" and for several years worked a gold claim on the American River near Forest Hill, CA, while working construction jobs in the area.

His uncle in Colorado sparked an early interest in fishing and hunting for Jack, a great love of dogs (especially hunting dogs) and wildlife. He had a great gusto for life, and although it was tempered by the wear-and-tear of work and experience, Jack remained an exuberant force.

Jack is survived by his wife, Samye Stills, of Redmond, OR; his long-time friend, Susan Finch, also of Redmond, OR; his two brothers, Steve Compton ('77) of Cheney, WA and Bill Compton of Berkeley, CA; his niece, Cassandra of Oaxaca, Mexico; and his nephews, Sean and Seth both of Richland.

Autumn Funerals, Redmond, was in charge of arrangements.
