Charles Miller

Charles Milton Miller, age 47, died February 4, 2001 in Santa Fe, NM. He was born January 18, 1954 in Richland to Ruth and Robert Dunlap Miller.

He graduated with the Class of 1972 from Richland's Columbia High School. Charles graduated from Washington State University in 1976. He studied physical chemistry at Columbia University and Stanford University, completing work for his PhD in 1980.

Charles went to Los Alamos National Laboratory in December 1980 and worked with Nicholas Nogar, where they became close friends and colleagues.

He spent most of his career in the Chemistry Division at LANL conducting research with lasers and leading critical projects related to national security. In 1998 he moved to the Nuclear Weapons Directorate program office for scientific computing to head up a major defense related activity.

Charles met Marlene Vaughn in May, 1981. They were married June 11, 1983 in Pueblo, CO.

Survivors include his loving wife, Marlene; daughter, Randi, her husband Michael Zavislan and their children, Michelle and Melissa of Pueblo West, CO; two sons: Steven Porter and Colleen Gaffney of Los Alamos, and Scott and Marianne Porter of Albuquerque; Charles' parents of Richland; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Visitation and services were held on February 8, 2001 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 1967-18th Street in Los Alamos, NM. Interment was at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.

Casket bearers were Steven Porter, Scott Porter, Michael Zavislan, Ron Estler, Stephen Lee and Paul Dotson. Honorary casket bearers were Kathie Wright, Sam Olivas, Mary Anne Sattleburger, Marcella Nogar, Don McCoy, Ken Koch, Jim Stine and Tom Seed.

His father died at the age of 84 in Richland on October 11, 2002.

His mother died at the age of 87 in Richland on August 30, 2008.
